Oh that is tough. It is a very relatable article. This “. Yes, I can do hard things, like run 100 miles, but I can also do hard things that don’t require a single step.” And it is the hard things that don’t require a step that don’t make the highlight reel or get cheers from others. That is what makes it extra hard!!
Once when I was injured I returned to playing my guitar because I realized I needed joy and immersion that didn’t require physicality (well a different kind). I find that still helpful
Thanks Paula. I knew you'd get this! And yes... joy is so important and finding it in new ways is always a good thing! Im so grateful for our Thursday group. It makes me feel so much braver putting my words out into the world!
Well first dear friend you know I understand and totally get this but in different ways. My fight is I am hungry and want to eat but I tell my body you didn’t workout today due to injury, like you I have a pain that is limiting me, calorie burning is limited! So the argument with myself has been humorous and exhausting, I do deserve to eat! Thank goodness for a partner who relies on me to cook, there is food and I am partaking! I’m not saying no to home made strawberry shortcake! But the voice is still there but shushed by my chomping! I love you sista!!! It’s good to share all the things!
I feel that struggle when the brain loses a coping tool. You do a great job explaining how it feels for your brain; and despite the exhaustion (and boredom--so real) you're noticiting your feelings and gaining so many insights. I'm so glad you shared your words!
Sorry to hear all this shite! I trust that between the Dr's, you doing the right things, and being smart and safe about recovering, you'll be back on the trail in no time. Hang in there Aquarius 😘
I’m so sorry Ali. I soooooo freaking get it. I wish I had a magic wand to make you feel better😢 from a medical perspective . Stay the heck away from dr. Google nothing but trouble that guy. I wish I had other words of wisdom but it seems we are both just learning as we go. From on Aquarius to another ❤️here if I can help
Thanks Blue! I knew you'd relate. And it was so fun to follow along and see you embrace the Yeti community that has been such a big part of why I freakin love this sport! Ha, yeah, Dr. Google......
❤️one of these days maybe we will hit a yeti or something else at the same time until then open to whatever you feel like chatting about or if you need to scream into the wind
My goodness, so sorry to hear Ali. I knew you weren't running and had wondered why. I'm in the same boat, not running, but for a different reason. I can totally relate to the fact that nothing else gives you the feeling that running does. I miss it so, but with the move I have a huge distraction which has been helpful. I hope your mind will continue to adjust to this additional complication and you give yourself grace along the way. Sending vibes for healing of the body and mind 🤗
I feel for you Ali. I know how you feel about running. I basically had to give it up last year due to a knee issue. I would feel better when I was running but then I would try to push it and my knee started to bother me again. So I looked for another outlet and took up cycling. Not the same as running though.
The brain is a strange thing. I cannot speak to ED, but I have been coping with hypothyroidism for over 20 years. I just cannot seem to get it under control. Fatigue, depression, weight gain and more. Exercise helps of course.
Your physical activity at your job helps your brain but you need an outlet that you can enjoy and spend your energy on.
I am not sure if you have had a MRI. I had a MRI once on my hip area. I read the report before I spoke to my physical therapist and/or orthopedic doctor. When you are older such as I, an MRI can show all kinds of issues. Many of those issues are "typical" for my age and not necessarily bad. So keep your eyes open and listen to those who know what they are talking about.
I also have osteoporosis in one hip. No pain. It doesn't bother me. I've been lifting weights for ten years and running for 25 years. These activities did not prevent my osteoporosis. My doctor had been pushing for about 5 years to start taking a drug for the osteoporosis. I just started it this month. I can stop the drug at anytime. There are several new drugs on the market today that were not around 5 years ago.
Thank you so much Jenn! For reading, sharing, and offering great suggestions. I do have the MRI coming so thanks for the heads up. I have osteoporosis in the spine and had it in the hip as well, but started HRT a few years ago and the hip is now osteopenia!!!! So that's good news. Working on my heavy lifting (outside of 50 lb. flour bags...LOL!) so hopefully can bring my scores down more!
Thank you so much for reading and finding my thoughts relatable. Makes being vulnerable a bit more rewarding when it hits someone and means something....
Ali... I'm so sorry you are going through this. I know how much running means to you 🩵, but know it will be there waiting for you once you are healed. You are one of the smart ones who listens to your body....After my traumatic horse injury, other doors opened that I didn't even know existed. Perhaps use this time to try new things, sometimes what's out there is astonishing....wishing you peace during this downtime..I know you'll be back stronger than ever xo
Thanks Krista! I am discovering that walking/hiking is pretty good too, especially in the beautiful place I live! And I even signed up for the FKT website to peruse the idea of that... although mine would most likely be an SKT...... LOL! As always, thanks for your kind and wise words. Now go have a blast in Wales!!!!!
Hi Ali, I have been in that kind of mind-state. What changed my life was anti-depressants. What about asking your primary care provider if a short-term course of SSRI's might be helpful until you are running again. I wish you a rapid return to the running that nourishes you.
Thanks for reading Polly and for your thoughtful comments. I'm doing pretty good now and working through things in different ways. So glad the SSRIs were able to help you.
I am so sorry for what you are going through! I have heard from other runners in ED recovery that being injured is triggering for the ED. The latest Your Diet Sucks podcast episode on hunger is really interesting and you might relate to some of it. Hang in there! If you feel like talking about it on my subscriber zoom next Thursday, I’d love to support you there.
Thanks Sarah! I have been really proud of myself for fighting through and doing what my body needs. Looking forward to the next Zoom, and actually it's the same day as my MRI... fingers crossed :)

Wow.
My heart goes out to you, Ali, because I know how much you love running, and now I know how necessary it has become.
I have faith that you will get through this, and if necessary find something else that will help you feel complete.
Know this: You are truly loved 🥰
Thank you so much Carl! And I do feel so loved by you!!!! And yes... I will get through this since the only way out is through.......

Thanks Darlene! I miss our time running on the farm, but am excited to see your new home and keep moving however our bodies let us :)

Extremely relatable content, esp. re: ED/appetite/hunger cues. Hope you get answers and are back to running soon!
